CNC Press Brakes: Buying Guide for Your Metal Workshop
How to choose the right CNC press brake: tonnage, bending length, control systems and key factors for your sheet metal forming investment.
What is a CNC press brake?
A CNC press brake is a machine that bends metal sheets using a punch and die, controlled by a CNC system that ensures precise, repeatable angles. It is an essential machine in any metal fabrication workshop.
Key factors for choosing your press brake
1. Tonnage (bending force)
Tonnage determines the maximum thickness and material type you can bend. The basic formula is:
Tonnage = (650 x S² x L) / V
- 40-80 tons: ideal for thin sheet (up to 3mm) and small parts
- 100-160 tons: versatile range for most workshops
- 200-400 tons: for thick plate and structural parts
2. Bending length
Determines maximum part size. Standard lengths are 2,500mm, 3,100mm, and 4,100mm.
3. Drive system
- Hydraulic: robust and reliable, ideal for high tonnage
- Servo-hydraulic: better energy efficiency and precision
- Electric (servo): maximum precision and speed, less maintenance
